Design as an art form: Lolita by Ron Arad at the MoMa, New York

15.09.2009

Currently running at the Museum of Modern Art in New York until 19 October is a retrospective of internationally renowned designer and architect Ron Arad, entitled “Ron Arad: No Discipline”. Included in the exhibition is Lolita, the avant-garde chandelier Ron Arad created in 2004 for Swarovski's Crystal Palace Collection, and which has since been shown around the world from Venice to Tokyo, Miami and Paris.

Lolita plays with the traditional form of a chandelier, and features 2,100 specially developed Swarovski crystals combined with LEDs, arranged in a spiral shape that narrows at the bottom. It is unique in the way it playfully employs modern communications technology: exhibition visitors can send an SMS to Lolita on (917) 774-6264, and the text message is shown on the spiral gradually moving from top to bottom. This creates the impression that Lolita itself is slowly rotating.
