Light Art: James Turrell takes advantage of the optical perfection provided by SWAROVSKI OPTIK

15.03.2009

An optical delight thanks to maximum precision: both American light artist James Turrell and SWAROVSKI OPTIK can justly make this claim. An extraordinary work of art created by James Turrell in close collaboration with SWAROVSKI OPTIK makes that perfectly clear. Now, this piece is a part of his new presentation at the Centre for Light Art in Unna (North Rhine-Westphahlia, Germany):

The installation has the appearance of an enormous camera obscura: In the upper section of the 14-metre-high, two-storey tower, visitors can look directly through the opening toward the sky. The latest happenings in the firmament are then captured by a lens and projected into the lower section of the tower building as a mirror-inverted, round image, allowing the viewer to experience nature as a work of art.
The central element of the installation is a special lens with a diameter of 300 millimetres, which a project team cut over a period of four days. This unique work of light-art thus once again proves that the expertise and optical perfection of SWAROVSKI OPTIK extend far beyond products alone.

The exhibition “James Turrell – Geometry of Light” can be seen in Unna until 31 May 2009. The light installation will then become a permanent installation in the museum.
