Optics

Optics is a branch of physics dealing with the properties and interactions of electromagnetic radiation with matter, especially that of light.

Phenomena such as reflection and light refraction are analysed in geometric optics. Wave optics describes phenomena which clarify the wave nature of light such as interference, diffraction and polarisation. Crystal optics deals with the behaviour of electromagnetic waves in crystals. Physical optics primarily examines quantum, X-ray and non-linear optics. Technical optics transfers findings from the other fields into the technical development of optical instruments. Physiological optics is concerned with sight and perception processes.
