Electric Chandeliers
Crystal chandeliers in neon and halogen light
From the 1950s there have been experiments with neon lights and „energy-saving lamps“ in chandeliers and even during the war the Lobmeyr company worked experimentally with Philips Eindhoven and for example installed one of the first neon chandelier with a dimmer in the chamber of commerce in Klagenfurt. Despite the attempts to create more or less festive neon chandeliers, neon light has retained its image being cool and lifeless and until today has rather been used for shop lighting. With the relative new technology of the halogen lamp a new conquest of private flats and houses. In the process the trend is not for installed lighting furniture but for flexible lighting with spots for the needs of the moment. Exactly as with neon light, crystal chandelier design has only taken account of innovations in halogen light in exceptional cases. This is arguably also the reason why the term “chandelier” is rather associated with classical models.
